The Par Value of Everything
A few months ago, I was taking my daughter to visit colleges. I had some downtime and went for a walk in a local park down the street from our hotel. As I was walking along, minding my own business, a guy yelled out my name: “Tom, is that you?” At first, I did not remember his name, but he must have noticed my confusion and quickly reminded me it was Hector from the 21st floor. Hector and I worked together for years at a startup in our twenties. We were based on the 21st floor of the South Tower of the WTC. Our startup failed soon after 9/11, and we all went our own ways. Hector and I were close friends back in the day but had lost touch. By chance, we ran into each other in a park in Southern California, and we decided to grab coffee. We sat and talked for ninety minutes. What Hector shared with me was a powerful story of perseverance and triumph.
After 9/11, Hector got his MBA and began his career in LatAm microfinance. He quickly rose through the ranks and led a group that covered all of Latin America. In the mid-2000s, his group started to sputter because of Latin America's economic woes. Hector was “restructured.” He got a severance package and was shown the door. A week later, his daughter was diagnosed with leukemia. This was 2014.
He said, “The next six months were a blur of fluorescent lights, bitter coffee, and the soul-crushing realization that no amount of pedigree or capital could negotiate with a cellular mutation. I tried to 'manage' the illness, but I was merely an amateur in the arena of grief. My wife, Elena, watched me disintegrate into a hollowed-out shell, nursing a hidden bottle and a bottomless depression. We were ghosts in our own house, the marriage fraying until it was little more than a frayed thread. We were days away from a formal separation when I sat by my daughter’s bed and finally stopped trying to be a banker. I just held her hand and listened to her breathing.”
In that vulnerability, he saw the flaw. “The oncology data management systems were archaic, fragmented, and cruel. Using the brutal discipline I’d honed on Wall Street, I started a healthcare analytics firm from the hospital cafeteria. I wasn’t chasing a bonus; I was building a bridge for families like mine.” Two years later, he sold that company and retired. His daughter is now in remission.
Anyway, I thought this chance encounter was a cool story to share. There is much to take away from Hector’s story.
